Fakin’ it-March 25, 2007

It’s official, this is the time of year that I begin to feel pasty white.  The weather is beginning to get warmer and our clothing gets lighter.  I yearn for a healthy glow.  Oh the memories of sitting on the beach listening to a boom box (something like “Billie Jean”) and smoking Marlboro Lights.  If I think hard enough, I can smell the Hawaiian Tropic.  OK back to reality.  Sun tanning makes you look old, leathery, and freckled.  So what to do??? Try sunless tanning.

Sunless tanning is a bit of a pain to master at first but once you get the hang of it, it gets easier.  Here are some options:

  1. Sunless tanning lotions that you apply yourself.  I personally like to use them only on my face (looove Clarins), as it’s too difficult to do your own body without major streaking (a self tanning no-no).
  2. Spray tanning booth (a.k.a. Mystic Spray Tan).  You essentially go into a booth naked, close the door, face towards the nozzles and get sprayed.  A little claustrophobic but over time it gets easier.  Some tips:  wear a shower cap on your face and head.  Yes on your face, as it’s easier to control the streaking.  When you are finished getting sprayed, leave the shower cap on your face and gently pat the excess onto your face then take off the shower cap.  Wash hands immediately.  As for feet I say wear the little paper booties that they give you and then try to rub excess lotion from legs down to your feet a bit.
  3. Air brushing – This is the best and most expensive.  Great to do before a special occasion.  Many spas offer this treatment; my favorite is Red Hots Spa in Roslyn, NY.   A couple of hours after this treatment (which is not for the shy and timid as you are almost completely naked while someone is spraying you) you look as though you were on vacation.
  4. Air brushing at home kits – I have no idea what they are like.
  5. Self-tanning treatment in a spa.  It’s simple, you get undressed, and a technician scrubs you and exfoliates your skin and then applies self tanner.  It’s great if you have a lot of time – not for me but it works well (try Estee Lauder Spa).
  6. One more tip  – wear dark loose clothes after you self tan.

O.k. so now you have a beautiful glow and you are getting ready to go out at night- here is how to enhance it.  You can go two different routes depending on your mood.  One way to go is – after the shower, apply Johnson’s Baby Oil  or Neutrogena Sesame Oil .  You will look positively glowing.  Another way to go is to apply Loose Lips New York Face and Body Bronzer (smells sooo good) on any skin that is showing (face, neck, chest) and then apply Loose Lips Indispensable Glow  on arms and chest.  Again you will look simply glowing and shimmery.  Well until next time … I better get glowing (I mean going).

“I need your lovin’ that’s the bottom line  – I need your lovin’… the lyrics keep on running through my head.  The song is called “I need your Lovin’ by Teena Marie.  One of the greatest classic disco artists EVER!!!  Anyway, here’s the story, I was in Roosevelt Field Mall (on Long Island)- this past weekend and I came across the most fabulous clothing store.  It’s called Ruehl No.925. It’s an adult clothing store owned by Abercrombie and Fitch .  I’m sooooo excited about this store!! OK. let me explain – the outside looks like a New York City townhouse.  When you enter the store, it feels like a mix between a Ralph Lauren store  and a New York City club.  The music is just the right volume, not too loud like Abercrombie and Fitch.  Incidentally, are teenagers/young adults (i.e., Abercrombie and Fitch customer age) these days DEAF!!!! Anyway, I had such a good time strolling around Ruehl No.925, boppin’ to the music (I need your lovin’), AND looking at really cool clothes.  I ask you, can life get better than this???

Let me explain the clothing, mostly sporty and very good quality.  Soft mushy sweatshirts with West Village logos on them, cool t-shirts, cute skirts and jeans.  I love the zipper up sweatshirt in white, but they ran out of the medium size.  The sale rack is also worth checking out as I found a few pieces for the gym.  The store also has great what I call “fill in” pieces like plain white t-shirts and some button downs.  Overall, this store in the really cool Gap category.  Well, until next time…happy shopping.

By the way, I was talking to my friend Nikki (a fellow “fashion obsessor” as om moi) and she told me to check out a cool blog called Shop Diary - it was great, I highly recommend it.  Thanks Nikki.

Working the Nail Polish Market

I have become obsessed with the Chanel limited edition nail polishes.  The fact that they’re “limited editions” have made me yearn for them even more.  The colors include Black Satin, Pink Satin, Noir Ceramic, Blanc Ceramic, Vamp, and Silver.  I have called stores all around the country Nordstroms, Macys, Lord and Taylor, to find them and yes, sadly to say, it has taken a chunk of my time.  For instance, after calling 12 stores in order to find the silver color I found out (via the internet) that Chanel silver is a limited edition in the UK (ugggg).  O.k. so what’s so great about this nail polish?  First of all it’s a nail lacquer.  The texture and color quality is gorgeous!!  I love how the colors complement each other.  For instance, Pink Satin on finger nails (ladies, short and real nails only) and Black Satin on toenails.  One of my favorite ways to wear them is Black Satin on nails and Black Satin with white tips (i.e.,  black french) on toes.  The Ceramic colors (Noir and Blanc) have a beautiful shimmer and look great anyway, on fingernails and on toe nails).  The color that I am most nostalgic about is Vamp.  Or should I say, the return of Vamp.  This color came out years ago and was recently reintroduced as a limited edition (pretty brilliant marketing I’d say).  Anyway, Vamp looks great on short, real nails and looks amazing on toenails).

So, I was in the nail salon the other day.  I took out a bottle of my Chanel Black Satin polish.  The “nail lady” was ohhing and aahhing when suddenly……this woman next to me, UNSOLICITED declares that she doesn’t understand why a person would spend so much money (under $20) on nail polish when SHE uses a black no name polish (ESSIE) and it looks EXACTLY the same.  I smile, keep my mouth shut and think, FYI lady with no fashion sense who likes to rationalize, they don’t look the same!!!

O.k. so I could only find Chanel Silver on ebay and I since refuse to spend $80 on polish, I did so research and came across an alternative.  My current insider tip is a polish by OPI called Rinse Charming.  It is a shiny metallic and is the perfect complement to this spring’s latest fashions.  In fact, this color was used at the Louis Vuttion shows for spring.  Well, I’m off to the nail salon for a manicure and pedicure – I will be sporting this color and I’ll let you know what I think.  Until then…..

I want to thank all of the great sites who have welcomed Loose Lips and have spoken about us in their blogs.
